The Best Investors Are a Little Bit Boring

There is an old line among financial advisors: if your investing feels exciting, you are probably doing it wrong.

It sounds like a joke. It is not.

Every few years a new “sure thing” comes along: a hot stock, a crypto coin, a sector that is supposedly can’t-miss. The people who chase them feel brilliant for a while. Then the story changes, and the ones who jumped in latest usually get hurt the most.

The investors who quietly do well tend to be the boring ones. They own a diversified mix of low-cost funds. They keep contributing. And when the market drops, they mostly do nothing, which is often the single hardest and most valuable thing to do.

Gut instinct has a poor track record here. Our instincts tell us to buy when everyone is excited and sell when everyone is scared, which is exactly backwards.

Discipline is supposed to be boring. That is the point. Boring is what compounds.

Your trusted advisor’s job is partly to be the calm voice on the day the headlines are loudest, and to keep your plan on track when your gut wants to abandon it.
