Making Financial Decisions with Confidence

Scott Sullivan |

The question I hear most often during volatile stretches isn't "what should I buy?" It's something quieter than that. It's: "Am I going to be okay?"

That's not a portfolio question. It's a confidence question.

Confidence in a retirement plan isn't built by finding the mathematically optimal strategy. It's built by finding the strategy that actually fits you — and then hardwiring rules to protect you from yourself when markets get difficult.1

The RISA® framework, developed by researchers Alex Murguia and Wade Pfau, starts by identifying where you fall on two dimensions.2 The first is whether you prefer to rely on market growth to fund your essential expenses, or whether you want contractual protections — guarantees — covering your basic needs no matter what markets do. The second is whether you value flexibility and the ability to change course, or whether you'd rather commit to a known, lifetime solution and remove the ongoing decision-making.

Where those two preferences intersect gives you your retirement income style. And the right style is simply the one you can actually live with — in year three of retirement and in year fifteen, when markets are cooperating and when they aren't.

But knowing your style is only part of it. The other part is building behavioral guardrails into the plan itself.

A 72-hour rule — a mandatory cooling-off period before making any major unplanned financial decision — sounds simple. But behavioral finance research consistently shows it prevents some of the most expensive mistakes retirees make.3 So do pre-set rebalancing bands that trigger automatically, removing emotion from the execution.

The goal isn't to eliminate risk. The goal is to make sure that when risk shows up — and it will — your reaction is governed by a plan you wrote in a calm moment, not by what the market did this morning.

If you haven't reviewed your Behavior-Aware Investment Policy Statement recently, or if you've never had one, that's a reasonable place to start. Let's talk.
