Safety-first retirement income: how to find your own style
This is the last email in the series. We have covered total return, the bucket strategy, and structured income. Today: the safety-first style, and then the question the whole series has been building toward.
The safety-first approach starts from a simple priority. Before you worry about growing your money, you cover your essential expenses with income you can count on. Those are the bills that arrive whether or not the market cooperates: housing, food, healthcare. Social Security is the foundation most people already have. A pension, if you are fortunate enough to have one, adds to it. Where a gap remains between reliable income and essential costs, some retirees choose to fill it with an income annuity, a contract that pays you for life. Depending on your situation, that may be appropriate; it is a decision to weigh carefully, not a product to reach for by reflex.
The appeal is removing a category of worry entirely. When the essentials are covered by contractually guaranteed income, a market downturn becomes uncomfortable rather than frightening. You can let the rest of your portfolio stay invested for growth and legacy, because you do not need it to eat. For people who are wired for certainty, this is often what finally lets them relax.
The trade-off is flexibility. Money used to secure guaranteed income is generally committed. You give up some liquidity and some upside in exchange for the floor. For a flexibility-first person, that trade feels like a cage. For a guarantees-first person, it feels like freedom. Same structure, opposite reaction, and the reaction is the whole point.
Which brings us to the question underneath all four emails. The best retirement income plan is not the one that looks smartest on a spreadsheet. It is the one you will still be comfortable with in year eight, when markets are down and the headlines are loud. That plan is different for different people, and RISA exists to find yours before you commit to it.
If you have read all four of these and thought, I am still not sure which one is me, that is normal; it is exactly the conversation worth having.
